Mehmet Akif Ozdemir, MSc
Visiting PhD Student

Education History:
Ph.D. Candidate, Biomedical Technologies, Izmir Katip Celebi University, Turkey
M.Sc., Electronics and Communications Engineering, Kocaeli University, Turkey
B.Sc. (Double Major), Computer Engineering, Kocaeli University, Turkey
B.Sc., Biomedical Engineering, Kocaeli University, Turkey

Mehmet is an engineer, researcher, and artificial intelligence enthusiast. He received his BSc degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Engineering-double major, and his MSc degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Kocaeli University, Turkey, in 2016, 2017, and 2019 respectively. Currently, Mehmet is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Technologies and a Research Assistant in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Izmir Katip Celebi University, Turkey. Within his undergraduate and master’s research, he has focused on the investigation of neurophysiological data for early diagnosis of several neurological and psychological disorders by using artificial intelligence-AI, biomedical signal processing, and neuroimaging techniques. During his graduate studies, he is working on determining the reliability of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation-rTMS neuromodulatory effect, and prediction of rTMS response before intervention in patients with stroke hemiplegia by analyzing clinical assessments, resting state Electroencephalography-EEG signals, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging-MRI data. In addition to his research efforts, Mehmet serves as a senior associate editor at BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making and also serves as a reviewer in various qualified journals.

Mehmet has currently working on further advancing his educational and research knowledge as a visiting research scholar at the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. In this role, he is working on the reproducibility and reliability of the various rTMS interventions by investigating cortical activity both in healthy subjects and patients with Alzheimer's Disease. He is also deeply working and learning about resting state EEG and TMS-EEG analysis, EEG source imaging, and brain network connectivity analysis to gain novel insights into human brain activity, behaviors, and its dynamics, and to further understand the underlying neurophysiological mechanism of the neuromodulatory tools on cortical excitability and neuroplasticity in healthy controls and neurodegenerative populations.

Personal Interests/Hobbies:
Mehmet loves discovering new places, traveling, and playing board games and computer games along with his passion for science and technology.

Personal Goals:
Mehmet's primary goal is to further develop his academic research and scientific skills in neuroscience to incorporate artificial intelligence approaches and brain stimulation techniques. For this purpose, he is dedicated to contributing to the deeper investigation of personalized therapeutic options and individually tailored stimulation for neurodegenerative populations by adroitly combining state-of-the-art technologies; AI, TMS, EEG, and MRI. Eventually, he wishes to contribute to the early diagnosis of brain disorders and the prevention of the burden of disabling after brain injury.
